The Euganean Hills: a natural oasis at the heart of the Veneto plain

The Southern portion of the county of Padua, there where the sweet roundness of the Euganean Hills merges and mingles with a plain rich in orchards and vineyards, is a land imbued with culture and tradition that jealously treasures the memories of its glorious past.
Its wealth of waters, its fertile land, and the mild weather have inspired populations to come and live here since ancient times. Its strategic position and the beautiful landscape attracted ambitious conquerors, refined noblemen, poets and writers of all times.

This area hosts a special ecosystem, where various species of flowers, plants and wildlife show themselves before the eyes of visitors. This balance is respected by accommodation and hospitality facilities, though offering comfort and amusements for every age range.
The Euganean Hills are all of this: a synthesis of natural and historical beauties, which well matches the idea of smart holiday.

Protected since 1989 with the establishment of the Regional Park, the Euganean Hills stretch over an area of nearly 18,694 hectares. The series of hills of different heights and shapes forms a special landscape that travellers identify at once whatever direction they come from.
This area is also rich in small towns that preserve historical and artistic heritage, and which can be reached by comfortable road connections or charming paths in the greenery: these paths can be treaded on foot, by bicycle or even horse-riding, in order to better perceive the peaceful atmosphere that reigns here.
To those who prefer the pleasures of food, taste reaches its climax here: temptations are not lacking, because care for natural tastes contributes to the beauty of the Euganean Hills.

The Regional Park of the Euganean Hills is not only an area where animal and plant species can live in perfect equilibrium, but also a system that promotes the preservation and the development of agricultural activities and of typical local produce and products.
The Park preserves many types of vegetation, ranging from the Mediterranean bush to chestnut or oak woods.
Among the protected animal species, travellers can admire a wide range of birds: from the small, lively robins to more impressive species as the sparrow-hawk or the barn owl. Also agricultural produce is safeguarded: olive oil, for example (which will soon be granted I.G.T., or typical geographical indication), or various types of cheese as Grana Padano or soft “caciotta” sometimes flavoured with herbs.

Also the wine-making tradition of the Veneto is well alive in the area of the Euganean Hills.
Thirteen varieties of wine were granted the D.O.C. name, or registered designation of origin; among these, the most famous red wines are Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon, among white wines is Chardonnay, while typical sparkling wines are Serprino and Moscato Fior d’Arancio. Of course, all these exquisite “nectars” go well with gastronomic specialties made with natural foodstuffs: from a simple snack with bread and salami, to more elaborate dishes translating recipes that have been handed down from one generation to another. You only have the embarrassment of choice: lots of rural tourist facilities, wine shops, restaurants and “trattorias” await you to please your mouth and make a toast to the beauties of the Euganean Hills.

The presence of well-known hot springs contributes remarkably to the fame of the Euganean spas, which offer the necessary properties for aesthetic and therapeutic treatment.

An environment as the Euganean Hills is strongly inviting for those who wish to keep in good shape or do some sports. Modern facilities and the natural setting well accommodate many activities.
By way of example, golf: the area hosts as many as 5 Golf Clubs (Padova, Frassanelle, la Montecchia, Galzignano, Colli Euganei) and also the Golf Academy of Montecchia with its practice field, where people can make the first “steps” in this sport, or improve their play technique with the support of expert golfers.

The lovers of horse-riding only have the embarrassment of choice: trekking paths and various riding schools are scattered all over the territory, and welcome beginners and experts. Passion for horse riding is also demonstrated by the many national and international show-jumping competitions organized in Abano.
For those who instead prefer riding a bicycle, a wide range of paths and routes lead to the discovery of artistic and natural “treasures”.
But there are also people who love to put themselves to the test and aim at the top: here are artificial climbing walls, or the not-to-be-missed natural rock gym at Rocca Pendice.

The Euganean Hills are dotted with famous villages and small towns.
In Arquà Petrarca, an old village that still preserves the magic of the Middle Ages, the great Italian poet of the 1300’s Francesco Petrarca loved to write his rhymes as he was inspired by the beauty of these places; most often he used to write while on a boat he sailed the waterway of the Euganean Riviera to get to Padua from his vineyard in Arquà, “a pleasant place in the Euganean Hills, in a delightful and healthy position”.
Abano, Galzignano and Montegrotto Terme restore strength, and offer relaxation and wellbeing in their spa facilities.
Battaglia Terme, a medieval village, occupies a strategic location along the waterways and is characterised by picturesque Venetian bridges.
Teolo offers charming landscapes and hosts the old Benedictine Abbey of Praglia.
Torreglia rises amongst monasteries and Venetian villas.
The walled city of Monselice was built on a crossroads at the times of the Lombards.
The old walled city of Este took its name from the great dynasty of the Estense family; its wealth of historical villas and parks was built along the road that takes to Montagnana, another great walled city that is surrounded by 2-km long city walls built during the Middle Ages, with 24 grandiose hexagonal towers that rise as high as 19 meters.

A much sought-for residential area for the noble and patrician families of Venice who had their “mountain” villas built here to spend their holidays, the area of the Euganean Hills was embellished with magnificent villas, grandiose gardens, large parks designed by architects of all ages with box mazes, magnificent frescoes, statues, century-old trees and plays of water.
Some examples are Villa Barbarigo at Galzignano, Villa dei Vescovi at Luvigliano, Villa Selvatico at Battaglia Terme, Villa Papafava at Frassenelle, Villa Emo at Rivella, Villa Capodilista at Montecchia di Selvazzano, Villa Beatrice d’Este at Baone, and Villa Duodo at Monselice.

More than this, the defence of the towns and of the roads that took to these towns from enemy attacks was here entrusted to the Castles built on the Euganean Hills, and which hold testimony of a great past: some are Castello del Catajo, the Castle of Monselice, the Castle of San Martino della Vaneza at Cervarese S. Croce, the Castle of Este and Castello Carrarese di Valbona at Lozzo Atestino.
