A food-and-wine heaven where local species of grapes and traditions merge with local food products
The Euganean Hills are a true natural island protected by a Regional Park, and characterised by lush and variegated vegetation and a land that offers its precious fruits in every season: delicious wild berries, cherry, strawberry, blackberry, jujube, pomegranate, fig, delicate native greens, grape, precious honey and oil processed according to a 700 year-old tradition.
Here there winds the Wine Road of the Euganean Hills, in Italian Strada dei Vini dei Colli Euganei, a food-and-wine heaven where the species of grapes and local traditions melt with the best seasonal products from the vegetable garden, the field, the farmyard, the vineyard, and with native greens.
Among first courses a taste of savoury risotto is mandatory: the traditional Padua-style "rich" risotto (risotto ricco), a special and typical recipe with chicken entrails, or the risotto made with wild greens picked in the fields; and then the more traditional risottos with bisi (peas), with ciche (chicken livers), with quail meat or chicory; home-made pasta, from the bigoi (thick, rounded noodles) with duck meat sauce to tagliatelle (noodles) with goose meat and pumpkin sauce, from pappardelle (wide ribbon noodles) to pastry pies and flans. The main courses propose stuffed duck, the Padua hen, rabbit, guinea-hen and pigeon roasted on the spit, fried chicken, stewed meats and tasty grilled meats; to finish with cakes and tarts covered with fresh fruit or jam, small biscuits to be plunged in egg flip made with Moscato wine, and the pinza made with corn. And the whole meal is of course accompanied by a good, DOC wine of the Euganean Hills.
